Dam renovation Kam
The 60 year old dam was to be renovated by reducing the porosity and by closing the cavities created over time by animals. Three methods were verified – vibro flotation, vibro stuff flotation columns and Impulse Compaction.
Due to its technical and economic advantages it was decided to use Imulse Compaction. A row of compaction columns in close proximity to each other were created through a specific sequence of compactions. This without displacing the dam crest.
By means of the Impulse Compaction the complete gravel dam could be renovated and had its porosity and permeability reduced all the way down to the in-situ layer of gravel. Through the volume reduction the dam experienced at the same time an increase in its load carrying floodplain capacity and stability, further leading to a reduction of the danger of erosion.
